Temple of Hatshepsut

Set into a natural amphitheater of cliffs at Deir el-Bahari, the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut is one of the most architecturally striking monuments in Egypt. Its clean colonnaded terraces feel almost modern.

Hatshepsut ruled as pharaoh in the 15th century BCE, and the temple's reliefs record her divine birth and a famous trading expedition to the land of Punt. It is a short drive from the Valley of the Kings and usually visited together.

Historical background

Built by the royal architect Senenmut around 1470 BCE. After her death, Hatshepsut's images were attacked in an attempt to erase her from the record, damage still visible today.
